Chapter 26
An hour later, Anders, Erwin, Binh and Riese finally left the biofacility. Even as they stepped back into the jungle, Anders couldn’t shake what Vacek had said before all hell had broken loose.
You pussies wouldn’t last two seconds out there.
Anders stopped the group, listening to the sounds of the rainforest, breathing in greedy gulps of air heavy with moisture. They’d taken the few remaining MRE’s, clothing and weapons―the last inhibitor and two combat knives among them. But instead of wasting time taking inventory then and there, they’d decided to take all of the packs and sort through the contents later.
If they were careful, what remained might last a few more days.
Anders checked his watch, as though he expected it to somehow show him the way. The compass built into the display indicated they were heading north. During the initial briefing, it had been made clear they were looking for an island situated off the coast of modern-day Portugal―mind you, a country that wouldn’t exist for another twelve thousand years.
Sea levels during the current period were much lower since millions of tons of water were still locked up in the ice sheets. As the climate began to warm over the next few thousand years, the glaciers would recede and raise seas levels by nearly two hundred feet. Which explained why the artifacts he’d discovered on the Lady Luck had been underwater.
But even that didn’t explain the state of the archaeological site they’d come upon. Side scan sonar as well as visual contact from rovers had made it perfectly clear some kind of natural disaster had befallen the area—a massive volcanic eruption or perhaps an earthquake. Whether from rising tides or a natural disaster, the island they were searching for would eventually end up deep underwater.
He glanced over at Riese, who rested a hand against a tree while she drank from the water filtration bottle.
“I still can’t stop thinking about poor Khazanov,” Anders said, the anger boiling up inside him again.
“I miss his barreling laughter,” Erwin said, with more than a touch of melancholy in his voice.
“The moment that spear punctured his leg,” Riese said after taking another sip and wiping her mouth, “I had the sinking feeling he was a goner.”
“The joys of studying microbiology,” Anders said, forging ahead.
“Certainly makes it hard to look at the world,” she replied. “Did you know there are more bacteria in your lower intestine than planets in the Milky Way galaxy?”
Anders shook his head, imagining how Khazanov with his weak stomach might have begged her to stop. “Given what lies ahead,” he said, “I can’t help but wonder whether he isn’t the lucky one.”
“There you go again,” Riese said. “Throwing in the towel.”
Anders furrowed his brow. “I don’t know where you got that from, but I can assure you I finish everything I set my mind to.”
“If you say so.”
“Well, I’d love to know where you’re getting your information from.”
Riese tossed her hands in the air. “Hey, it’s just the word on the street.”
Erwin quickened his pace to catch up, ready to enjoy the show.
